Mountain Light has an active Social Justice committee focused on issues of health, food insecurity, shelter, and authoritarian resistance.
In winter, our members helped to staff the community warming center in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where temperatures dipped into the single digits. The program served unhoused members of Gilmer County, providing both overnight shelter and meals. In February 2026, our congregation focused on organizing a Community Health Fair to serve both members and the community at large. Programs included a blood drive, home aid services, hospice care information, and wellness services.
To address food insecurity and hunger, we organized support for the Gilmer County Food Bank and initiated the UU Guest at the Table program for members. In 2025, we launched a garden for the hungry on church grounds, which provides fresh produce to congregation and community members in need from spring through fall.
The Social Justice committee also organizes participation in anti-authoritarian demonstrations in North Georgia including the national No Kings rallies. To reinforce our commitment to peaceful protest, we are working to connect our members to nonviolence and de-escalation training.
We are also actively engaged in UUGALAN efforts to communicate with our elected state and federal legislators on priority social justice issues. We invite all members of Mountain Light and members of our mountain community to join us.
