Summary
Requires the Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) to verify data from other agencies and registries to determine SNAP applicants’ and participants’ eligibility. Also requires all household members to verify their U.S. citizenship status in order to qualify for SNAP benefits.
Details:
HB 947 goes beyond the Federal requirements for applying for and benefiting from SNAP benefits. Federal requirements state that the applicant and those who are to receive SNAP benefits must meet immigration status requirements. HB 947 goes one step further and states that everyone in the household, a roommate for instance, must also meet immigration status requirements. This is an attempt to deny food to families with mixed legal status.
Position: Oppose
Script:
Don’t deny children food by regulating eligibility beyond what federal regulations require.
Action:
Contact the House Agriculture and Consumer Affairs below. They passed the bill out of committee, but it was given back to them for a review by the House Rules Committee. The hearing is scheduled for 10:00 today (3/5/2026).
