It has been an incredibly busy month with runoff elections, a special legislative session, and all the vital work happening at Advancing Justice-Atlanta. On June 23, the Georgia General Assembly concluded its special session. The governor originally called this special session for redistricting and to address the recently passed state law to stop using QR codes to count votes by July 1. However, in a dramatic turn of events on the very first day, the House Majority announced they would not take up redistricting. This massive victory for fair representation is a direct result of our communities demanding transparency and accountability.

Thank you to everyone who flooded legislative inboxes, called your representatives, and showed up to our community events. While we are thrilled to celebrate this win, we know it does not prevent the possibility of redistricting in the near future, and we remain vigilant against any efforts that would unfairly weaken the voices of communities of color. Our work is far from over, so please continue to stay engaged with us in the fight for democracy, our rights, and for fair representation.

Advancing Justice–Atlanta is proud to continue our Court Watch program, where volunteers observe and document non-detained master calendar hearings at the Atlanta Immigration Court. By bearing witness, the program aims to promote transparency, identify trends that fuel our advocacy efforts, engage the community in understanding the immigration system, and inform the development of responsive legal services.
